Supply Chain update

Supply chains are showing some signs of stress due to excess demand against in many cases reduced or flat supply. Particular examples are American White Oak, and Western Red Cedar. Demand around the World for most appearance timbers is strong and supply chains are struggling to keep up. Reflecting the limited supply and difficulty in most of these products to get to market quickly. Jarrah being one such example. The timeframe from cutting the trees to making it into Flooring or other products is normally 12-24 months depending upon the dimensions and lead time for logging and sawing as well as kiln drying. 50mm American White Oak is very slow to dry and the lead time is every bit as long as Jarrah, but then we have to ship it to NZ and have a stock level to support manufacturers and so this adds 3-4 months to the chain. No excessive inflation apparent, and as long as everyone appreciates the lead times no big issues.

American White Oak

Western Red Cedar as the key example, was languishing under over supply and poor demand and prices were at all time lows, exacerbated by high NZ dollar values. The turnaround has been profound. Supply is struggling to keep abreast of demand for the old growth clear Western Red Cedar we are all used to. The prices do appear to have plateaued off for now, but we still have an elevated NZ dollar and there is no doubt supply is max'ed out. we track one item and that has doubled in cost in the past 5 years. Other species have not all followed the same pattern, but logic does say if it takes 100 to 500 years to grow the trees we harvest then there is a limited ability to increase supply ongoing.

A great year with strong growth again, although as is the norm in our industry there are lots of peaks and troughs along the way. Very strong regional patterns emerging with 3 areas standing out. Central Otago, Canterbury and Auckland are the drivers, the rest are small by comparison.
/imagesdb/Issue/2482450c-c251-453a-98f0-89b2c8703747.jpgSupply Chain update
Not a lot of surprises, naturally durable timber supplies are limited and by and large the recovery from GFC and re build in NZ have stretched supply chain capacities to supply.
