Supply Overview

Cole Hardwood truck with a patriotic flavour, we could do with more of this here in NZ

Supply side no real surprises. The supply of Canadian Western red Cedar remains tight and wider dimensions is difficult and expensive. This wide dimension stock is still at all time highs as far as cost go. American hardwoods remain in reasonable supply although I notice that Black Walnut is rising quietly all the time in cost. White Oak is in strong demand. Our Australian Oak which is mainly Victorian Ash has been impacted with the decision to reduce dramatically the level of harvest of Victorian Ash forests. The endangered Leadbetters possum has seen large increases in protected habitat leading to reduced logging.  The lost of jobs will be significant in rural Victoria.

We are making a concerted effort to avoid African and South American species and to this end are clearing out our Iroko stocks and not replacing them. So once our Wenge and Bubinga has been sold we will have no African timber. We are looking to promote more European and North American hardwoods instead. We aim to replace the tropical hardwoods with Accoya. FSC certified plantation grown and more durable and stable than any Tropical hardwood.

Supply dynamics show tight Cedar supplies, US hardwoods in general okay, Kwila decking very interesting. Local timbers we see Radiata clears as being good, but Rimu very poor.
