North American Softwoods

North American Softwoods- supplies of Western Red Cedar remain relatively tight and most suppliers are looking to see prices rise rather than fall. The imposition of countervailing duties did reduce demand in the USA for a while, but buyers are coming back and paying the duty and high prices for the Western Red Cedar. So even with the modest demand supplies are not keeping up. in all dimensions. The impact is strong prices and the likelihood is further price hikes . Here in NZ strong competition keeps prices under control but it is clear prices have to go up. Yellow Cedar supplies tight as well but modest demand. The latest news out of Canada is that one of the largest Cedar sawmills which had been down due to a lack of logs has now been permanently curtailed. Means if they can find logs the logs will be milled but reduces the standing sawmilling capacity. A further sign that the supply chain is restricted??

Yellow Cedar – we have got good levels of stock in 50mm thickness from 100x50 through to 300x50.

Western Red Cedar – we have had a busy year chasing stock replacement and then having it arrive in lumps making for uneven workloads. The thicker Joiner sections ( i.e 63mm and 75mm thick) have been hard to get and we are still chasing orders placed last year. We have  enough stocks on hand to cope with orders this year. The stuff takes a a long time to dry. We  45mm stock for weather boards, short 45 and 50mm for specialists and 50, 63 and 75mm stocks for Joiners.

/imagesdb/Issue/8e64db45-79ee-4e03-8970-65aa52a393c8.jpgSupply Overview
Supply dynamics show tight Cedar supplies, US hardwoods in general okay, Kwila decking very interesting. Local timbers we see Radiata clears as being good, but Rimu very poor.
An election, banking issues and shortage of skilled labour makes for interesting times.
