North American Softwoods

North American Softwoods – good demand for Western Red Cedar and some interest in Yellow Cedar. Western Red Cedar and Yellow Cedar are limited resource products and to grow sales we need to embrace the “knotty” look and start using more of this timber.

Western Red Cedar – Logging is still barely keeping up with the level of demand. The level of stocks of logs and timber at the sawmills is low by historic standards. Supplies are still tight and larger dimensions are challenging at times to get. Suppliers still expect firm pricing and maybe even small increases in the early part of 2018. The biggest challenge is to guess what is going to happen with the exchange rate. We buy from Canada in Canadian dollars which due to the reducing value of the NZ dollar means costs here are rising. 10% roughly this calendar year, which when added to the higher cost of Cedar makes for price increases next year.

Yellow Cedar – supplies and stocks in reasonable shape.

Supply dynamics show tight Cedar supplies, US hardwoods in general okay, Kwila decking very interesting. Local timbers we see Radiata clears as being good, but Rimu very poor.
