North American Hardwoods

North American Hardwoods – in general US Hardwoods are selling very well and face good strong demand. White Oak in particular is a World winner. We are seeing growing demand for Black Walnut and Cherry. White Ash supplies are okay, although we know supplies are dwindling with the effects of the Green Emerald Borer. Costs although fairly steady are rising as we watch the NZ dollar fall

White Oak  – we face regular hassles sourcing wider widths in White Oak at a competitive rate as demand is so strong. Overall we are maintaining costs except in Black Walnut where we have seen costs rising. Stocks have taken a hit with strong sales in the last 3 to 4 months and although we have new stock coming it takes a few months to catch up.

White Ash – demand and supply in reasonable harmony and although costs are rising slowly, we are hearing more and more about the devastating effect the new Green Emerald borer is having on the White Ash trees in the USA. Hard to know precisely when the supply will be gone but it is not many years away, unfortunately. The timber remains great value for money and we have good stocks of 25, 40, 50, and 75mm thick material on hand.

Black Walnut – hearing more and more about this timber, and we have found a pretty good supply from a supplier who is grading to Japanese standards. We are paying the premium to buy this stock and although it is not perfect, it is the best we can find that is still affordable. We have 25 and 50mm stock on hand.

Hard Maple & Cherry – some demand but a lot less than for the 3 species above. We are seeing a few more jobs in Cherry after years of virtually no sales?? Hard Maple remains great value for money.

Supply dynamics show tight Cedar supplies, US hardwoods in general okay, Kwila decking very interesting. Local timbers we see Radiata clears as being good, but Rimu very poor.
An election, banking issues and shortage of skilled labour makes for interesting times.
