North American Hardwoods

North American Hardwoods – Supplies of most American hardwoods is sufficient for demand. The difficulties lie with American White Oak where demand from Stave mills who make Bourbon Barrels. These Stave mills are paying a premium and taking a lot of the best quality logs. Making the supply of sawn lumber in larger dimensions (thicker and wider boards) more restricted and driving up costs. Black Walnut has or is seeing somewhat of a resurgence in fashion and as such we are finding getting better grades more difficult.

White Oak – very very busy with strong demand for T&G as well as sawn product for a wide range of products from battens to panelling to furniture. The most difficult aspect of the species is the random width nature of the supply chain. We have recently started paying higher prices for set width stock in 40mm and 50mm to try and make it easier for customers, and us in quoting jobs. Supply is limited in this way but trying to work out how to best use random width for jobs requires a lot of skill. We have good stocks in 150x25 through 250x25 in several grades, as well as 40mm in random width in Prime and Comsel grades, some stocks in Prime 150x40 and 200x40, finally a wide array of 50mm in random width, as well as 150x50 and 200x50.

American White Oak set width stock being sorted for us

White Ash - strong sales for a wide range of end uses. We have stocked up in 25, 40, 50 and 75mm random width stock. Just a note to keep in mind the matching veneer is actually from Europe and it is bright white. American White Ash is also bright white but the heartwood is a light brown colour and comes with the white sapwood..

Hard Maple – sales are steady not spectacular. In stock we have 150/200x25 as well as random width 40mm and 50mm stock. We select material as white as we can. Something to consider is that Birch veneer with Hard Maple timber is a reasonable match.

Black Walnut – stronger sales than we have seen in some years. Reflects a fashion trend? Not too sure. We work real hard to find the best value Walnut we can as the grade of the standard product is pretty average. We stock 25 and 50mm stock. The coaster below was made from USA Black Walnut, love the colour and grain!!

A great year with strong growth again, although as is the norm in our industry there are lots of peaks and troughs along the way. Very strong regional patterns emerging with 3 areas standing out. Central Otago, Canterbury and Auckland are the drivers, the rest are small by comparison.
/imagesdb/Issue/2482450c-c251-453a-98f0-89b2c8703747.jpgSupply Chain update
Not a lot of surprises, naturally durable timber supplies are limited and by and large the recovery from GFC and re build in NZ have stretched supply chain capacities to supply.
