Market Update

Count the cranes.

There sure are a lot of cranes in Auckland and Christchurch… although the market does appear to be very cost conscious and fussy. The trends driving our business are the strong demand for weather screens , cladding as well as Hardwood T&G Flooring and decking.. The trends for more timber cladding and or screening does not abate and demand for weather boards is strong. dark coloured cladding is a big area and we are working on a new dark look which involves the use of charred Accoya. This is a very natural look. examples

Count the cranes??

We have updated the certclad weatherboard systems and they are available FREE of Charge for download at the 4 systems are Codemark certified. We are currently reviewing adding a further system. The systems are also available for download and ease of use at for inclusion in plans and specifications.

Hardwood flooring remains a staple for us although we have had a few complaints about the cost of American White Oak rising there is not a lot we can do. It is what it is. Demand from the market has driven White Oak costs up, but the largest cost driver is the NZ dollar drop from last years highs. We have however found a few cheaper options. A narrower 105mm cover White Oak board for example is cheaper. The best value for money is currently Red Oak and we are again offering a fabulous American Oak Prime Grade (albeit Red Oak) T&G at 25% under White Oak pricing.

Hardwood decking has seen a number of new products come to market, some of which are not tested and or tried here in NZ. Surprising how fast we can all get sucked in. We too have been looking at seeing if we can find a good alternative to Kwila. Kwila decking has been a staple for many years and it is hard to beat. Our main Kwila supplier now has their forest concession FSC certified and hopes to be chain of custody certified before Xmas, this is a big step forward. We have however been seeking a non tropical solution and have been working with Australian hardwoods to this end. Principally Black Butt with some Jarrah thrown in for good measure. Both are PEFC certified.
