2017 off to a good start

Domotex is huge!!

I am writing this under the pump as time rapidly seems to fly by and my newsletter cycle is getting longer. In mid-December I travelled to the USA to see some of our Hardwood suppliers. I flew into Charlotte, North Carolina at supposedly 9.30pm, which ended up being 11.00pm and then bags took 53 mins to arrive. At that time of the day no rental cars and not a lot happening full stop.. The first stop was West Virginia a small town called Galax and there visited a supplier doing some interesting things, amongst which is employing a growing team in an area of high unemployment. The Boss Lumber team is doing a great “Superior “grade of Black Walnut for us amongst other things. Next stop was Charlottesville where I met the team at Northland Forest Products who are making a great Rustic White Oak strip for us for T&G Flooring. The next day was driving to Augusta Lumber then to Athens in Ohio. The immediate thing I noticed was the drab scenery and it was something to see all the trees bare of leaves. In Ohio we did some investigating on supply of White Oak and White Ash, then a quick trip to Wisconsin to see a specialist Black Walnut sawmill (part of Baillie Lumber) then onto Indiana and Cole Hardwood. The last part was driving to Chicago which is about 1800kms, with the side trips I made. In January I was lucky enough to attend the Flooring Show (Domotex) in Hannover and was blown away with all the options available and choices. We had decided to visit the show as a precursor to deciding what we should do about entering the Engineered T&G market here in NZ. We have now purchased our first stock and are in the process of registering a brand name here.

A great year with strong growth again, although as is the norm in our industry there are lots of peaks and troughs along the way. Very strong regional patterns emerging with 3 areas standing out. Central Otago, Canterbury and Auckland are the drivers, the rest are small by comparison.
/imagesdb/Issue/2482450c-c251-453a-98f0-89b2c8703747.jpgSupply Chain update
Not a lot of surprises, naturally durable timber supplies are limited and by and large the recovery from GFC and re build in NZ have stretched supply chain capacities to supply.
